How can I backup my Hyper-V virtual machine(s)?

To backup your Hyper-V virtual machine(s),

  1. Sign in to the IDrive application and click 'Server Backup'. A slider menu will appear.
  2. Click 'Hyper-V'. The Hyper-V backup/restore console appears. By default, 'Hyper-V backup' is selected.
  3. Select 'Online Backup', or 'Local Backup' or 'IDrive Express™ Backup'.

    Note: On selecting 'Online Backup', the data will be stored on the IDrive cloud whereas on selecting 'Local Backup' or 'IDrive Express™ Backup' the data will be stored in the local drive.

  4. Select the virtual machine(s) from the list and specify a temporary path for the local backup.
  5. Note: Once the local backup is initiated, '.ServerBackup' folder is auto-created.

  6. Click 'Schedule Now'.
  7. The 'Scheduler' is displayed where you can schedule the backup for any future day and time or perform an immediate backup of the selected virtual machine(s).

Does IDrive support incremental backups for Hyper-V virtual machines?

Yes, for Hyper-V configuration version 8.0 or later, IDrive supports incremental backups after the initial full backup. This ensures optimal use of Internet bandwidth and storage space.

Can I backup Hyper-V virtual machines to a network-mapped drive or NAS drive?

Yes, you can backup Hyper-V virtual machines to a network mapped drive or NAS drive. While choosing a local backup path, select the network mapped drive / NAS drive and provide the necessary authentication.

To backup your Hyper-V virtual machine(s) to a network mapped / NAS drive,

  1. Sign in to the IDrive application and click 'Server Backup'.
  2. Click 'Hyper-V'. The Hyper-V backup/restore console appears. By default, 'Hyper-V backup' is selected.
  3. Select 'Online Backup', or 'Local Backup', or 'IDrive Express™ Backup'.
  4. Select the virtual machine(s) from the list.
  5. Select the network mapped drive / NAS drive as the location for creating the disk image and click 'Schedule Now'.
  6. The 'Scheduler' appears where you can schedule the backup for any future day and time or perform an immediate backup of the selected virtual machine(s).

What are the system requirements for IDrive Hyper-V backup?

The system requirements for IDrive Hyper-V backup are,

  • Microsoft Hyper-V server 2008 R2 SP1, Microsoft Hyper-V server 2012, Microsoft Hyper-V server 2012 R2
  • Windows 2008, Windows 2012, Windows server 2016, Windows server 2019, Windows server 2022
  • 2 GB RAM
  • Sufficient hard disk space to store the virtual machine files for temporary backup and restore

Do I need to turn off or shutdown the virtual machine(s) in Hyper-V manager to take a backup?

No. You do not have to shut down your active virtual machine(s) to perform a backup. IDrive enables you to backup virtual machine(s) in their Running state.

How secure is the data transfer during backup/restore using IDrive Hyper-V backup?

IDrive uses military-grade 256-bit AES encryption to encrypt all data transferred during a backup/restore operation using IDrive Hyper-V backup feature.

How do I restore virtual machine(s) to the Hyper-V Server?

To restore a virtual machine(s) to the Hyper-V server,

  1. Sign in to the IDrive application and click 'Restore'.
  2. Select 'Online Restore', or 'Local Restore', or 'IDrive Express™ Restore'.
  3. Locate and select the 'IDHyperVData' folder in your IDrive account or local drive.
  4. Note: If 'Local Restore' is selected, you can choose the required version from the 'Version' list.

  5. Click 'Restore Now' to restore the 'IDHyperVData' folder to the local computer.
  6. Once the 'IDHyperVData' folder has been successfully restored, click 'Server Backup'. A slider menu will appear.
  7. Click ‘Hyper-V’. The Hyper-V backup/restore console appears.
  8. Click 'Hyper-V restore'.
  9. Browse and choose the 'IDHyperVData' folder (restored earlier from your IDrive account or local drive).
  10. Select the virtual machine(s) you want to restore to your Hyper-V server.
  11. Click 'Restore Now' to restore the virtual machine(s) to the Hyper-V server.

Can I restore Hyper-V virtual machines from a network mapped drive or NAS drive?

Yes, IDrive lets you restore Hyper-V virtual machines from a local path, including network mapped and NAS drives.

To restore the virtual machine(s) to the Hyper-V server from a network mapped drive or NAS,

  1. Go to 'Server Backup' on the IDrive application. A slider menu will appear.
  2. Click 'Hyper-V'. The Hyper-V backup/restore console appears.
  3. Click 'Hyper-V restore'.
  4. Browse and select the 'IDHyperVData' folder saved in your network mapped / NAS drive.
  5. Select the virtual machine(s) from the list, which you want to restore to your Hyper-V server.
  6. Click 'Restore Now'.

Is there a need for an additional/external storage volume for Hyper-V virtual backup?

No. However, do ensure that the temporary location that you select while scheduling the Hyper-V backup has sufficient disk space to hold the selected items, during the backup process.

Can I attach a VHD file from IDrive Hyper-V backup to a different Hyper-V server?

Yes, You can attach a VHD file from IDrive Hyper-V backup to a different Hyper-V server.

How to restore Hyper-V virtual machine backup to different servers?

To restore Hyper-V virtual machine to different servers,

  1. Create a virtual machine in the Hyper-V manager.
  2. Go to 'Specify Name and Location', and specify the name for the virtual machine.
  3. Go to 'Assign Memory' to assign memory.
  4. Go to 'Connect Virtual Hard Disk' and select 'Use an existing virtual hard disk'.
  5. Browse and select 'Vhd/vhdx' from IDrive backup folder.
  6. Click 'Finish'.

How do I merge the snapshots (avhd/avhdx) to Parent Disk?

To start the merge,

  1. Identify the newest AVHD in the IDrive backup folder.
  2. Rename the newest AVHD (AVHD4) to VHD.

    Note: Do not rename all the AVHDs at the same time. Rename only the newest Avhd first.

  3. Choose 'Edit Disk' from 'Actions' in the Hyper-V Management Console.
  4. Click 'Next' through the first screen and select the snapshot file on the following screen.
  5. Select 'Merge' on the next screen and choose 'To parent virtual disk'.
  6. Click 'Finish'.

After merging, AVHD4 will be deleted automatically. Rename the second newest Avhd (AVHD3) to Vhd. Repeat all the steps until the oldest AVHD (AVHD1) gets merged with the parent VHD.

How do I upgrade my Hyper-V virtual machine to configure version 8.0 or above?

To upgrade your Hyper-V virtual machine,

  1. Shut down the virtual machine in 'Hyper-V Manager'.
  2. Select 'Action'.
  3. Click 'Upgrade Configuration Version'.

Note:

  • You cannot upgrade your Hyper-V virtual machine that is already at the highest configuration version supported by your Hyper-V host.
  • .iso files are not considered for backup.
